The National Honor Society (NHS) and National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) are the nation's premier organizations established to recognize outstanding high school and middle level students. More than just an honor roll, NHS and NJHS serve to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character (and Citizenship for NJHS). These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since their beginnings in 1921 and 1929.
Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in activities of the NHS and NJHS. NHS and NJHS chapters are found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. Territories, and Canada. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.

How to Apply for Membership?
To join NHS, you must apply during the one-week membership drive period at the beginning of each semester. You cannot apply after the week is over. Freshmen may not apply for their NHS membership. Sophomores may apply for their NHS membership at the beginning of their first semester at Monta Vista. You must re-apply for membership each and every semester. To qualify, you must have a GPA of 3.3 or higher.
To be eligible to wear NHS insignia at graduation, seniors must be active NHS members in their graduating semester. A senior is active if they earn at least 3 community service hours (after accounting for deductions for missed meetings and activities) by the end of March in the last semester before graduation.
For any semester before the final semester, a member is active if they earn at least 5 community service hours during the semester (after accounting for deductions for missed meetings and activities).
Members must have also paid membership dues in order to be counted as active for the semester. If you owe us membership fees for a prior semester, you must pay us before end of March to receive your NHS insignia.
- Life Member: active 5-6 semesters (stole + certificate)
- Honorary Member: active 1-2 semesters (certificate)
Meet the Officers
Spoorthi Davala, President
Hello NHS-ers! My name is Spoorthi Davala and I will be serving as your MVNHS president for the 2013-2014 school year. During my involvement in NHS over the past two years, I've been given countless opportunities to aid the community and make great memories and friends. This year, I hope that the NHS officer team can provide each of its members with the same great opportunities to serve the community as well as enjoyment! Aside from NHS, I have been singing and dancing for the past 10 years. I also enjoy oil painting and hiking! Feel free to talk to me or any of the other officers about NHS and hopefully you will find the same fulfillment and enjoyment as I have in NHS.
Cynthia Shen, Vice-President
Hello! I'm Cynthia and I'm your NHS Vice President for this coming school year. I've devoted the past 2 years of my life to NHS, serving as both a regular club member and a Public Relations officer. I feel honored to be a part of a club that is so active in improving our community! Aside from NHS, I'm really interested in math, science, and design. I love bad jokes and have a terrible sense of humor, so you should come find me and try to make me laugh! I don't particularly like talking about myself much, so I'm not sure what else to say about myself, but feel free to get to know me better throughout the school year. I promise I'm friendly! Finally, if you guys have any questions or comments about the club, definitely don't be afraid to speak up. Hopefully NHS will be as rewarding for you as it has been for all of us!
Shivani Komma, Treasurer
Hello MVNHS! My name is Shivani and I will be your Treasurer this year! Throughout my experience in NHS, I have been able to meet local leaders and make connections throughout the Bay Area. MVNHS has allowed me to understand the importance of serving our community and I hope it has the same impact on you. Outside of NHS, I am active in DECA and Technovation! My interests include traveling, museums, and NPR. I like trying new food, discovering new music, and word games. I hope you find NHS as enriching as I have!
Anna Liu, Project Lead
Hi! My name is Anna, and I'm really honored to serve as your Project Team Leader for this school year! Serving as the treaurer my junior year and as a member my sophomore year definitely taught me the value of volunteering in my local community, and I sure hope NHS does the same for you. I have a weird sense of humor and don't understand sarcasm half the time. I also love anything math, science, and engineering related as well as dance! Come show me cool logic puzzles and jokes (that I might not get) and obsess over reality tv shows (SYTYCD, The Amazing Race, Masterchef). I'm looking forward to an amazing year!
Claire Lu, Public Relations
A junior at Monta Vista, Claire is passionate about foreign policy, global affairs and diplomatic relations, as well as speech and debate, flute (youth symphony and solo), Model United Nations, and journalism.Besides being officers in NHS and Model UN, Claire is also an ambassador at the World Affairs Council and the founder of the Silicon Valley Community Advocates, a nonpartisan forum for discussing international relations and current affairs. Trhis summer, Claire participated in microfinance related rural poverty alleviation campaigns in villages throughout China.
Anika Ullah, Secretary
Salutations, lovely monta vista go-ers! I'm Anika and I'm your NHS Secretary this year! I've been a member of NHS since my sophomore year, and I was a Project Team offcier for NHS last year! I absolutetly love NHS because its a fantastic club that provides a multitude of oppurtunities to help out the community; various oppurtunities that coincide with various interests. A little about me: I'm an optimistic, cheerful kind of girl who's passionate about what some would think of as paradoxical areas of interest; fashion and science (medical science to be exact)! My ambition is to empower opressed women in the world through science: by means of research, practice, and teaching. At the same time, I've always been a girl who believed in embracing her feminity! I am a super friendly and open person, and I would love to be there for anyone who needs me! (But beware: I've got a penchant for corny jokes so if you become my friend you may have to endure my lame jokes). I hope you enjoy NHS as much as I do, and if you ever need me (even if we don't know each other), you can always count on me to be there for you!
Sarah Chekfa, Projects Team
Hi everyone! I'm Sarah, and I'm so excited about being part of the Projects Team this year! Through my first year in NHS, I was exposed to a lot of volunteering opportunities and I learned a lot about our community. I realized how vital it is to volunteer and help others out, and that has become a great part of who I am and also contributed to my love of volunteering! Besides volunteering, I also enjoy writing, playing the piano, and watching the news (trust me, it actually isn't as boring as it looks). I also love languages, electronic music, antique objects and architecture, and I happen to be the world's biggest TV junkie. NHS has and continues to be a great part of my life, and I'm sure it will be a valuable experience for you, too.
Harris Zia , Projects Team
Hey guys! My name is Harris Zia and I am going to be a Project Team member in NHS. I am very excited to be working with the NHS team to bring great community events as well as opportunities for volunteers to help our community. At school I am a Link leader so I know how important it is to help others. When we volunteer, we help our community grow and become closer. By helping others and volunteering, our work will return to us as a reward. Aside from school, I like to play soccer and hike in the hills on sunny days. I also love any type of music however I tend to love electro/dubstep. I have a big interest in technology and I love talking about computers, cell phones and more. See you guys around!
