Hey everyone,
Our next Meeting is going to be on Thursday May
13th during lunch in room D208. Meetings are mandatory,
so if you do not show up you will receive a one hour deduction. We will
announce the date of the Induction Ceremony on this day, but it is
expected to be near the end of the month, so get your hours quickly!
We
understand that this is during AP Testing so anyone who cannot show up
because of tests, please email us back, you will be excused form the
meeting, and we will email you the main topics of the meeting.

Hey NHS members!
Our next meeting will be this Thursday, April 8, in D208 at lunch. Please bring waivers if you have not yet turned them in, and also money for t-shirts if you do not have one yet.
Meetings are MANDATORY, so if you miss the meeting, you will be penalized with a one hour deduction. The meeting will start at the beginning of lunch, so please be prompt.

First Spring 2010 Meeting
We will be holding our first meeting of the semester Thursday, March 18th, at lunch in room D208.
If
you have not purchased a T-shirt or turned in your waiver form, this is
the time to do that. T-shirts are $8 each, and they must be worn at
every activity that you attend.

Officer Applications
Good news! We are waiving the GPA requirements
for officer applications -- You only need to be a current member to apply! We will also be taking applications online
instead of using the ASB box.
Please read the previous news posting below for the officer positions that are open for Fall 2010. We have opened a new officer position this year so be sure to apply!
Send your application to mvnhsofficers@gmail.com by March 5th. Please include the title of your first choice position in the subject of your email. For example: "Treasurer - John Smith".

Welcome to NHS
Welcome to our new members!
We
have sent an introduction email to the Spring 2010 Monta Vista NHS
Members. If you applied for membership and did not get an email, please
send us an email with your name and grade, and we will try to find your
application.
For those of you new to NHS, your
username is your email address and your password is your last name. We
have posted the first activity for the semester already. Sign up and
start earning your community service hours! You need 5 hours of
community service per semester to count as an active member.
We are also accepting officer applications for Fall 2010 (training
begins the second half of Spring 2010). We are looking to fill the
following positions:
- Public Relations: Act as the liaison to the office, advisor, members, businesses, and community service project leaders to aid the rest of the officer team in conducting fundraising, recruiting, and community service projects; promote NHS to members, prospective members, and the general public.
- Webmaster: Maintain and update Monta Vista NHS website with
member information, activities, and news; create new web pages for and
improve the content of the NHS website; provide technical support to
officers and members on the use of the website and member database.
- Secretary: Process member applications, maintain and
create membership documentation, such as applications, waiver forms,
officer applications; provide membership status reports to members and
officers, including those needed for graduation and induction.
- Treasurer: Responsible for all financial matters,
including bookkeeping, collecting member and T-shirt fees, budgeting
for activities, ordering food, T-shirts, & tassels, paying for
recurring fees (such as webhosting), and enforcing process for and
timeliness of reimbursements.
- Project Leader: Design, coordinate, and execute a major
community service project that may be entered for the NHS Outstanding
Service Project Award (see http://www.nhs.us/tabid/2683/
default.aspx ).
Please fill out the application and turn it in to the box in ASB by March 5th. There are lots of positions open so
be sure to apply!

Spring Semester Applications
We are accepting membership applications for Spring 2010! You can find the forms below or pick them up at Club Day or Club Promo Day.
Please bring the following to us at the Rally Court January 25 through February 5.
- Application Form
- Official or Unofficial Transcript (will be returned to you)
- $5 Membership Fee
- Waiver Form, if you do not have one on file for 2009-2010
- $8 for the T-Shirt, if you do not already have one
Sophomores, juniors, or seniors with a GPA of 3.3 or higher may apply.
Remember that members must reapply every semester!

Thank You, Volunteers!
Our principal received the following heartfelt thank you note from the Program Director at Collective Roots for our volunteer work at the school garden in East Palo Alto:
Ms. Scott,
I wanted to send a thank you to the Monta Vista Honors Society Students who came out and volunteered in the Collective Roots school garden during our November 21st work day. It was wonderful to have them in the garden and an inspiration to our elementary and middle school students who were also helping at the work day.
We would be delighted to have any of your student out to our garden for service opportunities in the future!

Volunteer Event a Success!
2009 has proven to be a busy year so far for Monta Vista NHS. Despite being a nascent organization, the Monta Vista NHS has donated over 600 hours of volunteer time this year. More than 90 of our members have participated in 27 volunteer activities.
We are also proud to be mentioned in the Santa Clara County Parks and Recreation Volunteer Newsletter for our participation in the Festival in the Park and want to thank our members for making yet another volunteer event a success!
We have posted a few more events. Please come and join us in making a difference in our community!

Applications
To join NHS, fill out the application for Fall 2009. We will also be handing out applications on Club Promo Day.
Juniors and seniors with a GPA of 3.3 or above are eligible to apply. Turn in your applications at lunch in the Rally Court September 16 through 25. No late applications will be accepted.
Remember also to bring your transcript (unofficial is fine), which we will check and return to you. The membership fees are $5. If you need a T-shirt, also bring $8. Bring cash or make checks out to MV ASB.
Members must reapply every semester!

Hey NHS Members!
Remember our mandatory meeting this Thursday, April 30th, at lunch in D207. Please note that this is next door to D208, where we usually hold our meetings. We will be talking about our activities and the details of the Induction Ceremony, and we are arranging a fun surprise for the members who attend the meeting!
Save the date: Our Induction Ceremony this year is June 1st, from 6:00 to 8:00pm in the Staff Lounge at Monta Vista, right next door to the Cafeteria. The ceremony is only for our active members, so sign up for activities and get your 5 hours done quick!

Meeting + Officer Apps
Hey NHS Members,
Come to our first meeting this Thursday, March 12th in D208 at lunch. Remember attendance is mandatory so do not forget! We will be talking about requirements and the new officer positions available.

Duties: As an officer, you will be expected to have good communication skills. Also, you, along with other select officers, will be in charge of fundraisers and Club Day. All positions require dedication and commitment to the club. If you know that you are already very busy many days of the week, please do not apply for officer position. This position is only for serious candidates who are truly dedicated and wish to make NHS a better club.
Public Relations: You are responsible for finding activities and contacting organizations to sign up for those activities.
Secretary: You are responsible for all administrative responsibilities.
Webmaster: You are responsible for maintaining and updating the website.

How to apply???
To join NHS, you must apply during the one-week membership drive period at the beginning of each semester. You cannot apply after the week is over. Freshmen may not apply for their NHS membership. Sophomores may apply for their NHS membership at the beginning of their second semester at Monta Vista only. You must re-apply for membership each and every semester. To qualify, you must have a GPA of 3.3 or higher.
Applications are attached here for anyone interested and are in ASB as well as SchoolLoop.
There will also be an informational meeting soon this Thursday in D208 (February 5th).
The membership drive will start on Monday, February 9th and will go on till Thursday, February 12th. Turn you applications into the cart at lunch during that time frame. Please bring your transcript to verify grades, your completed application, and your $8 membership fee.
